There seems to be a concerted effort, perhaps by the same people who want a White Men's Month, to add more male authors into the mix. I will just go on record and say I have been making a conscious effort to only read women authors so having access to more novels vetted through editors is fantastic. Men have plenty of platforms, reviews, and access to audiences and have benefitted from that system for years. If you don't want your free book written by a woman (with both men and women as protagonists), then perhaps you can show your support to men authors by purchasing their books. There is no shortage of men authors, including on Kindle.I would also point out that I did a search of past prime free months and there ARE male authors included. So this is also just a lie. Perhaps such people are upset that there might only be ONE male author in a group of authors. Hmmm, I wonder if that would bother a particular group of people?? What if that has been done for years and years and years? I can see how that would be frustrating.Once women and POC dominate the literary landscape for as long as men have and make up the majority of books easily available, reviewed, and marketed for the same amount of time, then I completely agree we should get to a mix that matches the demographics of our country. Then people can choose to read such books as they want. And maybe what we're finding out is that there is a great demand for such books written by women authors.In the meantime, perhaps reading some novels that require empathy and viewing the world from a perspective different from yourself, might not only make someone well-read, but also a more open person that might not complain via a review of a novel that there aren't enough male authors presented in a list of less than 10 novels, in one email, sent out once a month. I am a huge fan of author Loreth Anne White. That said, BENEATH DEVIL'S BRIDGE was not one of favorites, and I have read most of her books.White is a talented writer, who draws you into the story quickly. My complaints about BENEATH DEVIL'S BRIDGE have nothing to do with the format, although altering between two characters and two time lines (past and present) can interfere with the flow, White handles it deftly.The main problem for me was a lack of empathy for ANY of the characters in the story. I simply felt that I didn't get to know any of them well enough to care what happened to then. The actual murder of a young girl, as detailed during her autopsy, is horrifying, but the victim herself was hardly significant. It would have been a brutal and disturbing murder, no matter who the victim was.I always say plot is king and BENEATH DEVIL'S BRIDGE had a mediocre and fairly uninspired plot that didn't feel all that original. It had one unexpected twist, but the main mystery was not hard to guess and became obvious long before it should have.Lastly, the ending was entirely too long and went on several chapters more than I felt was necessary. No real surprises here.Disappointing mystery by one of my favorite authors.
